About Strategic Direction
About Us Where Institutional Depth Meets Personal Attention
Strategic Direction was founded to bring the rigor of high-level finance to the individuals, families, and business owners who rarely have access to it.
Why Strategic Direction Exists
Michael Baudo spent three decades advising at the institutional level, in senior leadership roles where the capital he managed answered to banks and financial institutions rather than to people. That work sharpened a particular skill: taking a complicated position apart, identifying what was actually driving the risk, and stating plainly what should be done about it. Strategic Direction exists to apply that skill on behalf of individuals rather than institutions. Michael now brings the same standards he once reserved for corporate balance sheets to the households, families, and business owners who want that caliber of attention working in their own lives.
The Thinking Behind the Name
A meaningful financial future is the product of choices made deliberately, each one measured against where you are actually trying to go. Rather than reacting to the headline of the moment or the swing of a given week, Michael weighs every decision against your long-term goals, so the plan you follow reflects genuine direction instead of momentum. The name is a reminder of that standard, held to on behalf of every person he advises.
The Values Behind the Guidance
Michael tells clients what they need to hear, including when the message is one they would rather not receive, because candor serves people better over time than comfort does. He explains financial matters in plain terms, so nothing important stays hidden behind jargon, and he works to filter out the constant noise of cable news and social media so clients can concentrate on what genuinely affects their goals. Family shapes how he sees his responsibility as well, in his own life and in the care he brings to the people, businesses, and legacies his clients are working to protect.
How We Invest
Optimization sits at the center of every investment decision, meaning the most return available for the risk you are prepared to carry, after tax. Those three variables move together. A holding that performs well in a taxable account may perform better in a different one, a strategy with attractive returns may carry risk that does not suit the household, and a portfolio that looks efficient before tax can look ordinary after it.
The work starts with what you already own, since concentrated stock, business equity, or a pension commits part of the outcome before anything new gets purchased. What gets built around those commitments either compounds the existing bet or balances it.
From there, the decisions are about construction and location. Which assets belong in taxable accounts, which belong in tax-deferred and tax-free ones, when gains get realized, and when losses get harvested to offset them. Rebalancing happens against the plan rather than against a calendar, and every position gets reviewed for what it costs, what it is exposed to, and what job it is doing.
We do not forecast markets. We build portfolios that can be held through a range of outcomes, then adjust when the facts underneath them change.
What the Name Means
Behind the name sits a conviction that guides how Michael advises everyone he works with. Reaching the life you picture, whether that means a retirement you can count on, a business you can eventually step away from, or wealth that reaches the next generation, depends on decisions made deliberately and backed by a real plan. Instead of reacting to headlines or short-term swings, Michael weighs each choice against where you are actually trying to go.
What Guides the Guidance
Michael speaks honestly, including when the message is one a client would rather not hear, and he breaks down financial matters in plain terms so nothing stays buried under jargon. A great deal of noise surrounds investing, from cable news to social feeds, and much of his value comes from filtering that out so clients can concentrate on what genuinely affects their goals. Family shapes his outlook as well, in his own life and in how he approaches the people, businesses, and legacies his clients are working to protect for the long term.
Institutional Discipline, Delivered Personally
Michael Baudo leads every client relationship himself, applying the standards he built over thirty years advising the largest financial institutions in the world. Dedicated teams across investments, annuities, life insurance, and retirement plans support that work, so the experience behind each recommendation runs deeper than any single advisor could provide alone.
Engaged in the Markets Every Day
Michael has never stepped away from the markets, and he still begins each morning studying them and forming his own read on where things are headed. That daily engagement, combined with the thoroughness and directness he built over a career in institutional finance, shapes how he advises each client.
Teams Across Every Pillar
Investments, annuities, life insurance, and retirement plans each involve their own specialists,
and Strategic Direction is supported by teams across all of them. Michael leads every client relationship directly, with that depth available behind each part of the plan.
